Norwood police clamp down on crime

In a proactive move to address rising crime rates, Norwood SAPS executed a targeted operation that led to multiple arrests.

Norwood police arrested five suspects during a successful operation led by Vispol Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Phaswana, on October 5. The operation, which took place around midday, was part of an ongoing strategy to combat illegal activities in the area, according to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha.

The operation was triggered by a tip-off from concerned community members about an illegal structure, referred to as a ‘shack,’ built at the corner of 17th Avenue towards the M1 in Houghton. Acting swiftly, SAPS officers executed a well-coordinated plan, resulting in the arrest of a suspect found in possession of drugs. Officers seized 45 small packets of drugs and more than R800 in cash from the individual. The illegal structure was also demolished.

“The suspect was informed of his rights and arrested for dealing in drugs,” said Masotsha. The seized drugs and cash were registered as evidence, and the suspect is expected to appear in court during the week.

In a further crackdown on lawlessness, four additional suspects were arrested for public drinking along Louis Botha Avenue, Highlands, Orange Grove, and Gardens Road in Orchards. Each was fined R1 000. “Drinking in public remains an offence, and we urge community members to respect the law,” Masotsha added.

Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett voiced her concerns about the growing rate of illegal activities in the area. “It is very concerning that lawlessness is becoming such an issue. I’m grateful to Norwood SAPS for their swift action and hope they receive the resources needed to address this growing problem. It’s a tragedy that many are forced to live on the streets due to the dire state of our city,” she said.

The police encourage the public to report any suspicious activities by contacting them on 081 001 0111 or 011 483 4609/14. With ongoing cooperation between law enforcement and the community, efforts to restore order in Norwood are gaining momentum.
