Afrikaans artist fights off attacker with pepper spray, narrowly escapes hijacking

Jooste has apparently been extremely vigilant and careful ever since a hijacking three years ago.

Popular Afrikaans artist, Tobi Jooste, managed to fight off an attacker presumably trying to hijack him in Fairland on Monday, 23 July at about 7pm.

According to a Facebook post by the popular Afrikaans artist, he managed to fight off the attacker thanks to a can of pepper spray and a piece of him ‘he never knew he had’ that kicked in and saw him fight off the attacker.

He further elaborated on the details when talking to a national publication regarding the incident. According to the report provided by the publication, Jooste was driving his new Range Rover in Fairland when a white Mercedes-Benz suddenly stopped in front of him while going around a traffic circle.

Jooste realised something was wrong when the passenger alighted from the vehicle and started making his way toward Jooste with a firearm in his hands. Jooste then exited his vehicle and raised his hands in surrender, as he initially planned to handover the vehicle. However, Jooste then decided grab his can of pepper spray and spray it at the attacker, who ducked out of the way, which is when Jooste decided to knee the attacker.

Jooste then proceeded to hit the attacker with his left hand until he fell to the ground. After the attacker fell, his associate also alighted from the vehicle, at which point Jooste jumped back into his vehicle and sped off.

Jooste had gotten pepper spray in his eyes in the process of fighting off the attacker, and was struggling to see. He stopped in a side street and managed to call a friend. Luckily, the incident occurred near the Fairland Police Station and emergency personnel were on scene rather quickly.

Jooste said that he would not be opening a case.

This is the second hijacking Jooste has been involved in, after he and his promoter, Lydia Winchester, were involved in a hijacking three years ago.
