Band frontman dies shortly before Roodepoort gig
Hog Hoggidy Hog front man George Bacon’s sudden death this weekend shocked fans.
Ticket sales to an upcoming show of ska band Hog Hoggidy Hog at Rumours Lounge were halted following the sudden death of their frontman.
George Bacon’s death shocked friends, family and the South African music industry on Sunday 31 May. The band’s publicist Margot van Wyk on Sunday said the circumstances surrounding his death are still to be confirmed. Their gig at The Assembly in Cape Town last Friday 29 May marked the last set the band played together before his sudden death.
He had been the frontman of the band since its inception in 1995; their focus was on blending punk, ska and traditional African music influence to create their unique sound, The Citizen reported this morning (Monday 1 June).
The band often referred to their style as ‘Porkrock’ and had several gigs lined up in South Africa this month, including at The Winston in Umbilo, Durban on 7 June, Arcade Empire in Equestria, Pretoria on 12 June and at Rumours Lounge, Weltevreden Park on 13 June.
Owner of the venue, Fred Otto expressed his condolences to the Record this morning and said that the gig was cancelled following the news on Sunday night, but alternative arrangements might still be made.
The Western Cape rocker’s son, Draco was born on 25 January this year.
Fans and friends flocked to his facebook profile to heed him an emotional goodbye.
