Man charged after accident in Amersfoort in which five-month-old baby died

He ran two pedestrians over, a 20-year-old man as well as a 23-year-old woman who was carrying a five-month-old baby.

A 31-year old, Mr Sibonise Patrick Mathebula, was charged for culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving which claimed the life of a five-month-old baby.

According to Col Donald Mdhluli, provincial police spokesman, the incident took place on Tuesday, 13 April at Amersfoort.

It is alleged that Mr Mathebula ignored a stop signs as he was chasing after a Toyota Avanza from Ermelo for ferrying passengers.

As a result, he ran two pedestrians over, a 20-year-old man as well as a 23-year-old woman who was carrying a five-month-old baby.

The baby was certified dead on the scene and the other victims were admitted to hospital for medical treatment.

The funeral of the baby took place on Saturday, 17 April at Daggakraal.

He was arrested and appeared before the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on 14 April, where he was remanded into custody until 19 April for a formal bail application.

“The police has strongly condemned the incident which resulted in the unnecessary loss of life and call on drivers to drive responsibly.” concluded Col Mdhluli.
