Comrades runners from Seshego and Polokwane donate to needy families

Five families in need were identified through local councillors and were given food parcels and clothes as a means of giving back to the community.

POLOKWANE – To make a difference in the lives of the needy, Seshego and Polokwane Comrades Marathon runners in collaboration with local councillors donated food parcels and clothes to five disadvantaged families on Sunday.

The beneficiaries were the Mothapo, Dlala, Thobetjane, Mabena and Makhohlola families.

Seshego and Polokwane Comrades coach, Steve Moyo said runners thought it would be good to give back to the community.

“We identified five families through local councillors and raised money through some initiatives. We then managed to buy food parcels and donated clothes. Most of the runners said they hope this would become a quarterly or annual event,” said Moyo.

Coach Steve Moyo, Elizabeth Mothapo (beneficiary), Khathutshelo Mathoho (Ward 14 councillor), Tshegofatso Thoka (Zero One Five running club) and Khutjo Mailula (Ward 17 councillor) hand over the donations.

He said without the project would not have been a success had it not been for the runners.

“Going forward we will also assist other families, and keep checking in with those who have already been helped. We want to thank the more than 60 runners who participated in this initiative and we extend our gratitude to the businesspeople who came on board and donated items.”

Ward 14 councillor Khathutshelo Mathoho said he is happy that the families received food parcels.

“In Ward 14, we identified one child-headed family who cannot afford the basics. As the leaders of the communities, we need to intervene in such situations. We will also assist them to apply for indigent registration so they qualify for certain benefits. We will make sure that we reconnect their electricity too,” he concluded.
