Kwena is hooked on crochet

Kwena Mongemoratho hopes to turn her hobby into a future business.

POLOKWANE – Kwena Mongemoratho crochets as an escape and was inspired by her grandmother to start with the hobby.

The Gr 12 learner from Northern Academy Secondary School shared that she used to watch her grandmother work her magic and she was intrigued. She decided to give it a try and she was hooked. “I have always been interested in making things from scratch. When I was younger I used to sew, but I stopped and decided to try something new,” she explained.

She added she didn’t expect the response she gets from people about her work. She didn’t realise how far her hobby would go but because it developed, she decided to ride the wave and turn it into business. “It’s exciting and I am happy that I am finally getting recognition for something I make with my hands, it’s my own work,” she said.

She told Polokwane Observer because she is in Gr 12, she is not fully committed to take too many orders because she is focused on completing her matric first. She shared that this was a difficult year because she lost family members during the Covid-19 pandemic, however, she remains motivated to do well in her final exams. “I have to focus on the bigger picture which is to realise my goal to pass Gr 12 with good marks,” she said.

She makes use of her study breaks to crochet and she looks forward to complete her final exams so that she can give the business her undivided attention.
