Elegance, tasty food, delicious cocktails and a fashion show with a difference brightened up Tuesday morning when a group of women gathered at Ocean Basket Mall of the North for the Fashion With a Cause show.
Guests were able to sit back and enjoy a cocktail or two as well as delectable canapés, delicious salads and a variety of desserts while enjoying the show. Several tables were sponsored by corporate entities, ensuring the success of the event.
Clothes and accessories for the show were supplied by Foschini Mall of the North and Foschini Kids Mall of the North. Outfits from the Donna Claire line was also on display to show that a fuller figure could still be beautiful.
All proceeds will be donated to the Polokwane Nasorgsentrum, a centre that takes care of intellectually challenged adults. Saartjie du Toit, house mother of the centre explained to guests that they take care of 32 people, the youngest is 18-years-old and the oldest 64.
The centre does not receive government funding and is completely dependent on donations and fund raisers such as the Fashion With a Cause event.
The models, all volunteers with no professional training, walked the runway like incarnations of the greats like Tyra Banks and Cindy Crawford. There was some confusion when Dolly Parton’s ‘Nine to five’ started playing and a woman wandered onto the stage in her night gown, but the truth was quickly revealed when she removed the gown and revealed a sharp suit, perfect for a nine to five job, underneath. The roaring applause that followed, showed guests’ appreciation for the skit.
The show ended with Lira’s ‘Let there be light’ and the models filled the room, each with a candle in hand. Master of ceremonies, Gerhard Franken, Ocean Basket Mall of the North Manager, said the gesture symbolised the light every person present brought to the lives of the Nasorgsentrum residents.
Organisers of the show, Gertrude Magadzi, Foschini Mall of the North Store Manager and Franken said they were very happy with the turnout and the positive response that they received. Both agreed that they would definitely host a similar show in future.
