Local school in deaf awareness initiative

The school depends on fundraising to supplement its grants from the government

Overkruin Hoërskool pupils are fascinated by the demonstration about teaching deaf pupils.

Transoranje School for the Deaf, in Pretoria West hosted a Deaf Awareness day on Wednesday, 7 September.

Guests had an interesting morning learning about the education of and communicating with the deaf.

The school provides specialised education to pupils from the age of 3 years to matric catering to the educational needs of the about 200 deaf pupils, and follows the public education curriculum.

The school also offers skills classes such as upholstery, hospitality studies, bakery, needlework, woodwork, metalwork, arts and crafts for the pupils who are technically inclined.

The school has hostels housing about 80 boarders.

Though the school is subsidised by the Gauteng department of education, it depends on sponsors and fundraising to make ends meet.
