Different congregations stood united in Eersterust on Sunday night to pray against crime.

Congregants were joined by residents in an open field at Trip Park near the BP garage to pray for an end to drug abuse and prostitution in their area.

Desiree Fisher, chairperson of the Local Drug Action Committee, said the prayer service was to seek divine intervention for the tragedies that did not seem to be abating.

“During the week of 7 September, the community was saddened by the untimely death of four members in the community in separate incidents,” said Fisher.

She said a primary school girl (6) was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Niger Avenue, a 25-year-old man committed suicide, another man succumbed to a drug overdose and a young woman was brutally murdered and dumped in a veld in Nantes.

“Her body was mutilated so badly that the police are battling to identify her,” she said.

“Many young people are arrested daily for possession of illegal substances.

“Where and when is this going to end? That is the reason we are having this prayer meeting today… to ask for God’s intervention in all these problems,” she said.
