The Agriculture Research Council (ARC) on Saturday officially kick started a countrywide survey at the Irene town hall on the different types of spiders and scorpions found in households.
According to Ansie Dippenaar from the ARC, the community helps them with their research.
“The community helps us by sending us photos of spiders they discover in their households. We use the photos and the information for our books and factsheets,” said Dippenaar.
She said most people want to kill spiders when they see it, but if they are better informed about different types of spiders it will help them know what to do with them.
The ARC boasts a visual spider museum where people can learn about them. People can also send photos of different spiders they discover and they will be identified and placed on the website.
The Spider Club of Southern Africa and Venomworks were also part of the open day.
