Animal shelter turns one

Wollies Animal Shelter celebrated one year of existence on Saturday at the shelter in Hestea Park in Pretoria North.

Residents took time out to spoil the animals that are kept at the Wollies Animal Shelter with gifts on Saturday at their first year celebrations of the shelter in Hestea Park in Pretoria-North.

The shelter, home to 130 dogs brought in by people who could no longer look after them and those found abandoned in streets, celebrated in style.

Wollies’ founder, Cilla Trexler, said some elderly people who move to old age homes and could not afford to look after their dogs, bring them to the shelter.

The shelter also keep neglected and abused animals.

“Some people drop dogs off in shopping centres,” Trexler said.

Over a hundred people brought gifts, including dog food to keep the animals healthy.

Wollies is actually not a new kid in the block. It started a sterilization project in 2003 with the help of registered vet.

The registered non-profit organisation opened its doors and placed the first dogs into kennels in 2003.

They only planned to be a small shelter but due to high demand they grew from strength to strength.
