In a significant crackdown on crime, law enforcement agencies in the North West province conducted Operation Shanela, resulting in the arrest of 1,258 suspects over the past week. The operation ran from Monday, 7 October to Sunday, 13 October, targeting various criminal activities in the area.
Among those arrested were individuals implicated in serious offenses including murder, rape, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The operation also focused on drug-related crimes, with multiple arrests for dealing and possession of illegal substances. Additionally, law enforcement officials apprehended 81 undocumented individuals for processing by immigration authorities.
Notably, the operation successfully brought 421 wanted suspects to justice through targeted raids conducted by detectives. The comprehensive effort included searches of 262 premises, 2,490 individuals, and 835 vehicles. Compliance inspections were also carried out at 385 licensed liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers.
The results of Operation Shanela were substantial, with authorities confiscating a range of illegal items including liquor, 120 explosives (fireworks), 10 rounds of ammunition, five cell phones, 13 dangerous weapons, and various drugs, alongside three vehicles.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena praised the collaboration between police and other law enforcement agencies, stating, “These relentless efforts are crucial in ensuring the safety and security of our communities.” He highlighted the importance of continued vigilance and community cooperation in the fight against crime.
