Leicester reward Leshabela with place in first team squad

English Premier League team Leicester City have rewarded 19-year-old South African winger Khanya Leshabela with a place in the first team squad for the 2019/20 season.

Having South Africans playing in the Premier League is rare these days and if Leshabela can impress coach Brendon Rodgers he will join Bournemouth’s Andrew Surman as another SA-born player in this world-class League.

Leshabela has already had a taste of the big time and came on as a substitute at the recent Fifa Under-20 World Cup in the 1-1 draw against Portugal when Amajita were already facing elimination.

The South African, who joined Leicester in 2013, has been in fine form for the Development Squad this season, with his performances earning him a place in Claude Puel’s squad for the Carabao Cup game against Southampton in November.

After an impressive campaign with Leicester City’s Under-18s last term, in which he was nominated for the Academy Player of the Year Award, the South African has continued his progression at Under-23 level this term.

He caught the eye with a stunning Premier League Cup strike against Nottingham Forest earlier in the campaign and also represented the club three times in the 2016/17 Uefa Youth League.
