The Belgian born goalkeeper is now a naturalised South African. He joined Sundowns two seasons ago but has failed to break into the starting XI in Pitso Mosimane’s team.
Maritzburg were left thin in their goalkeeping department when Shu-aib Walters left at the end of last season and joined Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Verbauwhede was quoted on the team’s website saying he is impressed with what he has seen at the team so far, and that he believes the team will get out of the relegation zone in no time.
“I’ve seen quality and a lot of focus at training. Preparation is done like it should be done,” said the 30-year-old.
He also had a message or the fans, calling on them to tirelessly rally behind the team: “Be hopeful and hold on. Like we don’t give up, they should also not give up. Be the 12th man that you always are, the way that you were against Pirates.”
Verbauwhede joins Tumelo Mogapi and Gregory Maasdorp who have recently joined the Team of Choice from Bloemfontein Celtic.
Maritzburg United play Mamelodi Sundowns this Saturday at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Kick-off is set for 8.15pm.
