Mere was dismissed following his second yellow card for time-wasting in the 75th minute.
“No coach can be happy with the type of red card Vuyo received,” Johnson said.
“He is the captain of my team and he should know how to lead.
“Delaying the free-kick, knowing at the back of his mind that he had a yellow card … he should be more cautious.”
The scores were level at 1-1 when the skipper was sent off and Johnson felt his side could have scored another goal if someone else had taken the free-kick.
“We have to go back to the drawing board with him one-on-one, talk to him and identify why it happened,” Johnson said.
“But all respect to him. He is the captain and he probably has his reasons. He will give those reasons to the rest of the group.
“We are very transparent in our team. Those things have to be explained openly and reasons must be given.”
Johnson admitted the red card almost cost them the match, but he was satisfied his charges managed to pull through.
“We scored a goal early in the second half, and of course the sending-off of Vuyo late in the second half put us on the back foot.
“We almost conceded a goal again because they had a good few chances late in the half, but we go home with the one point and we are happy.”
Meanwhile, Johnson says if Stars were to sign a player during this transfer window, it will have to be a special one.
“At the present moment, if were able to do that then it is going to be with someone very special. But presently, I think all the players we have in our team are very special. Special in a fact they will have to push themselves to another limit, because we need everybody to be sharp. I believe the fewer players you have in the squad the more concentration there will be in the training field.
“Right now, if I could say, I don’t think there is anybody who can really beef up my team.”
Ahead of the beginning of the current league campaign, Johnson made more than 10 signings including three youngsters that were promoted from the club’s development structures.
