Lionel Messi’s Club World Cup celebrations were somewhat diffused when a River Plate fan spat on him at the airport.

Messi was making his way through Tokyo’s Narita airport when the incident occurred.

It is reported that Plate fans started shouting at Messi and the rest of the Barcelona personnel using offensive language as they were making their way through the security gate. That’s when one of the fans got a chance to spit on Messi.

Messi scored for Barca in the final against a team from his native country of Argentina and this didn’t seat well with some fans judging by the spitting incident.

Mascherano and manager Luis Enrique are to have held Messi back after he was spat on by the fan.

Barcelona defeated Argentine club River Plate 3-0 in the final of the Club World Cup on Sunday.
