Baroka FC opened a four point gap at the top of the National First Division (NFD) football standings after they held off a late fight-back to record a 3-2 win over Cape Town All Stars at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.
The hosts took a two-goal lead in to the break after Olaleng Shaku netted with a spot kick on five minutes before Thabiso Kutumela scored another in the 25th minute.
Kutumela notched up his 12th goal of the campaign after the restart to make it 3-0.
While Igugu Lekapa mustered a stirring fight-back with goals from Zeph Mbokoma and Stanley Makgoka in the final 10-minutes of the game, Baroka held on for the victory.
There was also a win for Mbombela United, who ended the weekend in fourth position after a 3-1 victory over winless Mthatha Bucks at the Kanyamazane Stadium outside Nelspruit.
Skipper Mbede Manyike struck with a superbly taken early goal for the home team with Inky Masuku adding a second from the penalty spot before half-time.
Moses Spandeel pulled a goal back for Bucks 10 minutes from time, but Mbombela made sure of the win with a late strike by Mbede as he completed his brace.
Down in Cape Town, Santos showed tremendous fight to come from two goals down and draw 2-2 with AmaZulu at the Athlone stadium. Bornwell Mwape opened the scoring from close range when he tapped in Ayabulela Konqobe’s cross on 10 minutes. Petrus Shitembi’s volley on 27 minutes meant AmaZulu went into the break 2-0 ahead.
But the Peoples’ Team staged a rousing second half fight-back as Shaun Sopio netted six minutes after the break, following Broderick Burds’ delivery. A Burds’ corner with the very last play of the game saw Iqraam Rayners heading in for a share of the spoils right at the death.
