Owen Da Gama’s team will compete in the Under 23 Africa Cup of Nations which serves as the Olympics qualifier as the top three teams at the finish will be Africa’s football representatives in Brazil next year.
Kwanda Mngonyama said the team is ready for the tournament set for Senegal at the end of the month.
“We all know what we want, we have one goal – and that is to go to the Olympics next year,” Mngonyama told Phakaaathi on Wednesday.
“We have been together for a while and I think we are ready for anything now. It won’t be easy especially because we will be away from home, but we will have to be strong mentally. That’s the most important part, mental strength.“
The South Africans have been grouped with hosts, Senegal, neighbours Zambia and Tunisia in Group A. The two teams that finish top in each of the two groups will then advance to the semi-finals and the top three teams at the end of the tournament will qualify for Rio 2016.
Mngonyama said he knows that all these teams have the same dreams as them, and will be gunning for glory. “All our games will be difficult. But we are not scared of any of them. We will take it one game at a time,” said the Mamelodi Sundowns defender.
