Gavin Hunt believes Bidvest Wits’ young winger Phakamani Mahlabi is even more of a prospect than Benni McCarthy was at the same age.

Mahlambi, who turned 18 only last month, started for the Clever Boys against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, as the picked up a 1-0 win to go top of the Absa Premiership.

“I had Benni at 17,” said Hunt, who coached McCarthy at Seven Stars.

“This boy is better, the right thing for him now is to get out and go somewhere (overseas).

“He could beat people inside a phone booth he is so good …. He has unbelievable ability and he can score. I am going to try and change him from a winger to a striker, I think this boy can be a striker with the world at his feet. I haven’t seen so much natural ability in a long time, We have so many of these players in our country, you just have to find them.

“Youth excites me, it keeps me interested because I hate this game. I would pay to watch this kid play.”
