In 1990 a Cameroonian international Roger Milla scored a goal and celebrated by running to the corner flag and performing a dance. Milla is recognised as a pioneer of the many unconventional and imaginative goal celebrations seen since his 1990 World Cup goal celebration against Colombia in Italy. Here are five of Phakaaathi’s favourite goal celebrations.
Mariano Gorosito (Ambulance)
Marioano Gorosito of Club Luján in Argentina took celebrating a goal to new heights when he ran into a pitchside ambulance with a teammate to sound the horn. Gorosito’s goal was the third of the match for the club in 5 minutes, he was booked (yellow card) by the referee for his bizarre celebration.
Peter Crouch (The Robot)
Former England international Peter Crouch’s goal celebration has a life of its own and embodies the frame of the striker. The Robot celebration swept across dance floors in the 60’s, it is a dance in which the dancer moves their limbs in a way that imitates the movements of a robot. Crouch revived the dance for football fans in the 2000’s.
Goalkeepers are not known for imaginatively celebrating goals as they are usually too far away from play to join in with their jovial teammates. Robert Kidiaba of DR Congo and TP Mazembe, however, is an exception to this rule. Kidiaba celebrates the team’s goal by seating on his rear end and jumping forward. It looks better than it sounds, so have look at the link below.
Lee Bradbury (Rocky Balboa)
Athletes are known for having an interest in more than just one sporting code, this is the case with number four and five on our list. Boxing is a sport recognised worldwide, and here AFC Bournemouth’s Lee Bradbury pretends to knock out several his teammates after netting away at Grimsby in 2013.
A video of Wayne Rooney getting knocked out cold by a friend in his kitchen did the rounds on the internet and many criticised him for his actions off the field. A few days later Rooney scored a goal against Tottenham and chose to celebrate by recreating the scene from his kitchen.
