Itumeleng Khune held his hands up and admitted his error after his blunder sent Mauritania on the way to a 3-1 victory over Bafana Bafana in their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday night.

The Bafana captain inexplicably dropped a tame free kick from Mauritian defender Ali Abeid into his own net in only the sixth minute of the game at the Stade Olympique in Nouakchott.

“I can’t really say it was a loss of concentration, we all know how Adidas balls swerve, but I could have done better. It was a difficult ball to stop, but I should have done better,” said the Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana shot-stopper.

The 28 year-old added that he does not believe Bafana’s dreams of qualifying for Gabon 2017 are over, even though they have just one point from their opening two Group M matches.

“We still have 12 more points to play for and we must make sure we finish the group on 13 points,” said Khune.

“We are still positive, we want to go to Afcon 2017.”
