Orlando Pirates midfielder Lehlogonolo Masalesa has claimed the red card he received in his side’s 1-0 loss to Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 was a result of the “referee wanting the spotlight”.

“This is what happens when referees want the spotlight. I got a red card for standing up and shouting ‘penalty’ when I thought Mpho Makola was brought down in the box. Then Daniel Bennett called the ref to say I was swearing,” wrote Masalesa on his Facebook page.

Masalesa, who was sitting on the bench for Pirates, was sent off during the dying minutes of the game after a consultation between the referee and fourth official Daniel Bennett.

It is alleged that Bennett made the referee aware of something Masalesa had said on the bench.

Meanwhile, Pirates are said to be considering taking disciplinary action against the midfielder.
