Kaizer Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala would welcome his friend and the club’s former skipper, Itumeleng Khune, with open arms should he return to Amakhosi.

Chiefs management have been in talks with Khune and Mandla Masango in a bid to have the duo return to the club after they parted ways when their contracts expired.

Tshabalala had a conversation with Khune on Tuesday where the goalkeeper wished him luck on his new role as captain and they talked about Khune’s future with Chiefs.

“We don’t know much about the meeting he has had with the club as players,” Tshabalala said.

“If he comes back we will welcome him. This is his home. This is where he started playing football. That’s where he launched his career. We would be happy if he came back.

“The conversation I had with Khune was about me being given the responsibility of captaining the team. We had a chat about the possibility of him coming back. It was just a wish for me and I also wished him well. I hope that things will work in his favour and he comes back to the team. It’s not in my hands.”

What is in Tshabalala’s hands is helping Chiefs win the Carling Black Label Cup only for the second time in the tournament’s fifth edition.

He will captain the side on Saturday in a sold-out FNB Stadium against their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.

The starting line-ups have been confirmed.

Kaizer Chiefs XI: Brilliant Khuzwayo, Kgotso Moleko, Siboniso Gaxa, Siyanda Xulu, Tshepo Masilela, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, George Maluleka, George Lebese, David Zulu and Bernard Parker.

Orlando Pirates XI: Brighton Mhlongo, Happy Jele, Tshepo Gumede, Siyabonga Sangweni, Patrick Phungwayo, Sifiso Myeni, Issa Sarr, Oupa Manyisa, Thabo Rakhale, Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro.
