Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho will miss the inaugural Cape Town Cup because of injury he picked up at the Under-21 European Championships.

The midfielder has also been heavily linked with Arsenal, but a stress fracture of the tibia has ruled out any chance of a transfer during this window.

Sporting announced the news via their official Twitter account, confirming that the midfielder would be out of action for anything between 10-12 weeks.

Carvalho was the star of the Euro U21 tournament that was hosted in the Czech Republic last month, playing a crucial role in helping Portugal reach the final.

The 23-year-old did not miss a minute of his country’s campaign at the tournament, but did miss a crucial penalty in the final, which handed Sweden the title.

He nevertheless took home the player of the tournament gong as a consolation prize.

The Cape Town Cup is set to be played at the Cape Town Stadium on 24 and 26 July, featuring Sporting, English side Crystal Palace, as well as PSL sides Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United.
