The former Bafana Bafana striker led KZN club Arrows to automatic promotion from the National First Division last season after spending just one season in the lower league. But he was overlooked for the job in the Absa Premiership and has applied for the vacant job at United.
A source at Maritzburg United disclosed the club were looking at Bartlett as a possible replacement for Steve Komphela, who has joined champions Kaizer Chiefs.
“He has applied indeed for the job and management is looking at him as a potential replacement,” said the source, who did not want to be named.
Komphela will be remembered as the first coach to lead Maritzburg to a top eight finish and any coach who joins United will have a difficult job living up to that standard.
Bartlett said Arrows only informed him a week ago that he would no longer be in charge of the team.
“I got an e-mail from the club last week confirming that I’m no longer in charge,” he said. “I am disappointed considering what I achieved with the club with the team.”
Meanwhile, former Namibia coach Ricardo Mannetti is also believed to be in the running for the head coaching job at Maritzburg.,
Mannetti quit his job as Namibia coach just weeks after winning the Cosafa Cup title with the Brave Warriors.
