Kaizer Chiefs defender Eric Mathoho could miss the Carling Black Label Cup clash against Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates as he is still recovering from his toe injury.

According to a statement issued by Chiefs, the 25-year-old defender will miss the start of the pre-season.

“Erick Mathoho, still has a pin in the toe he was operated on after the Chippa United clash. As a result, the 25-year-old will miss the start of pre-season, but he’s expected to have fully recovered by the time the 2015/2016 Absa Premiership commences,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

Meanwhile, Chiefs have revealed that Morgan Gould, who tore his Achilles tendon in the second leg of the Caf Champions League first round clash against Raja Casablanca, is making good progress.

“The defender is at present working out five days a week on a specialised treadmill, using 50% of his body weight. He will probably be back to full action in September.”

With Chiefs having let go of Tefu Mashamaite, they could be forced to use one of the fullbacks Siboniso Gaxa or Kgotso Moleko as a centreback in the game against Pirates.

Chiefs and Pirates will meet at FNB Stadium on August 1.
