Menzi Masuku’s performance on Wednesday night impressed even SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund. The 22-year-old Orlando Pirates’ midfielder inspired the Buccaneers to a 4-1 thrashing of Matsatsantsa at Orlando Stadium with a Man-of-the-Match performance.

Masuku scored a brace, including a stunning strike that could be contender for Goal-of-the-Season in his first start for the Sea Robbers, having mostly come on as a substitute since he was promoted from the Multichoice Diski Challenge squad. .

“I think he was very good, we gave him a lot of space,” Igesund said. “He got into good areas. He is a huge talent. I hope he keeps his feet on the ground and keeps working the way he has. He had a decent game, got into good areas and he was dangerous.”

Igesund was however disappointed by his team’s defending, after taking the lead through Thuso Phala. Pirates fought back with Masuku’s brace and a goal apiece for Kermit Erasmus and Sifiso Myeni. The victory pushed Pirates to second place while Matsatsantsa are in eighth place, a point ahead of ninth place Polokwane City. The Pretoria outfit will now travel to Durban where they face relegation-threatened AmaZulu on Saturday at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“For each goal we conceded, we gave the ball away,” Igesund said. “We were in possession and gave the ball away. When we gave the ball away we weren’t set up to defend properly when they caught us on the break. There were four situations that disappointed me. We are still trying to finish in the top eight. We were second from last when I joined and the aim has been to be in the top eight. We have put ourselves in a position where we can finish in the top eight and also won a trophy. We want to challenge for the championship next season.”
