Mpumalanga Black Aces secured a crucial 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in their Premiership match at Mbombela Stadium, in Nelspruit, on Wednesday.

A 70th minute goal from burly Aces forward Collins Mbesuma was enough to separate the sides, and secured a vital three points for his team.

With the win, Aces move further away from the relegation zone to 30 points for 11th spot on the log.

Maritzburg, meanwhile, remain on 30 points in ninth spot.

Just on the quarter hour mark, Maritzburg had an attempt on goal. Ghanian striker Mohammed Anas reeled off a shot, but Jackson Mabokgwane in the Aces goal made the save comfortably.

In the 35th minute, Anas proved a menace once again for Aces as the player’s shot came in but was just marginally wide of target.

Mbesuma – a former Pirates player – had two chances on goal just after the hour mark. The first was directed just to the right of goal, but the second drew the attention of Virgil Vries in the Maritzburg goal, and the keeper safely held on to the ball.

Mbesuma was not done yet, as a third chance fell to the Zambian international but again his shot was wide of the mark.

The goal finally came for Mbesuma in the with 20 minutes left in the clash. His right-footed shot had the beating of Virgil Vries as Aces took a 1-0 lead into the dying stages of the clash.

Anas continued his efforts to grab a goal for the visitors, and his attempt in the 77th minute again was well-saved by Mabokgwane.

Aces, however, kept pressing for a second to extend their advantage. Abia Nale sent in a corner in the 79th minute, but could not find a teammate as the chance went astray.
