Mamelodi Sundowns beat Platinum Stars 3-1 to book their place in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Mzikayise Mashaba, Khama Billiat and Hlompho Kekana scored the goals for the Brazilians, while Eleazar Rodgers netted the consolation goal for Dikwena.

Stars started the game well and dominated in the early stages of the first half. They were unlucky not to take the lead in as early as the first minute when Robert Ng’ambi’s clever back-heel hit the post, with Dennis Onyango well-beaten.

It was Sundowns who took the lead in the 29th minute though when Mashaba finished off a good Sundowns move with a powerful shot that gave Kabelo Dambe no chance.

Rodgers then grabbed Stars’ equaliser just before half-time to make sure that the teams are locked at 1-1 at the break.

The game became a ding dong battle in the middle of the park in the second with no clear cut chances for either team.

It looked destined to go to extra time, however, two goals in the final 10 minutes from Billiat and Kekana made sure that Sundowns win the match and thereby progress to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.

Meanwhile, Golden Arrows edged Natal United 1-0 in the other Nedbank Cup Last 16 match played at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday.

Mabhudi Khenyeza scored the winning goal for Abafana Bes’thende.
