Wits have signed Buhle Mkhwanazi from rivals University of Pretoria, the Johannesburg side announced on Twitter late Thursday afternoon.

“@bidvestwits is pleased to announce the permanent transfer of Buhle Mkhwanazi from Tuks to the Clever Boys,” the tweet – from the club’s official account – read.

Mkhwanazi had been linked with a move away from Pretoria for the duration of the 2013/14 season, where Tuks finished 11th.

Orlando Pirates emerged early favourites to tempt the young central defender away from AmaTuks, but the Clever Boys swooped, following the departure of two of their first-choice stoppers.

Veteran hardman Matthew Booth announced his retirement from all forms of the game last month, while Kwanda Mngonyama returned to parent club Mamelodi Sundowns, after a successful, season-long, loan.

Mkhwanazi saw interest in his services rise considerably after he was named in the Championship of African Nations (Chan) team of the tournament in February, while on duty with Bafana Bafana.
