Orlando Pirates were sent packing out of the Telkom Knockout by SuperSport United on Saturday evening at the Mbombela Stadium.

The Buccaneers’ interim coach, Augusto Palacios, says his players had long forgotten about the humiliating 6-1 defeat they suffered against Stuart Baxter’s men on November 1 in a league tie at the same venue.

“Sometimes people are always talking about the 6-1, what about the time when Manchester City lost 4-0 against Barcelona?” said Palacios.

Matsatsantsa a Pitori edged the Sea Robbers 1-0 courtesy of a Thabo Mnyamane goal, who has now scored two games running.

“This game was not about the 6-1, the most important thing about the game was that the players were hungry to get to the final hence our preparations went 100%. I am particularly satisfied with the players, it has been a long time since we have seen Issa Sarr play the way he did.

“I still believe that we do not have any fear about the 6-1. The thing is: we were not scoring the goals with the chances that we have, and that is completely different story.

“For me, mental approach is knowing that these are professional players who play for national teams. You are counting Jackson (Mabokgwane) the goalkeeper, perfect, there is nothing you can tell him. National team, you are talking about Thabo Matlaba, Mpho (Makola), you are talking about Edwin Gyimah, Tendai Ndoro, these are all players with experience and winning mentality. This will not affect the next game.”

Pirates are away to 10th place Baroka FC on Wednesday evening at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
