Rodgers gets Bafana start

Eleazar Rodgers will start for Bafana Bafana tonight when they take on Burkina Faso in their opening Group D 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Ouagadougou.

The Bidvest Wits striker, who has been in fine form for the Clever Boys this season, was given the nod by head coach Shakes Mashaba ahead of Thamsanqa Gabuza, who appears to have paid for his own lack of game time at Orlando Pirates.

It will be the first time Rodgers has played for Bafana in just over eight years.

Mashaba would appear to have gone for just one up front against Burkinabe, with Pirates’ Mpho Makola sitting just behind Rodgers. In the absence of Andile Jali through injury, Dean Furman will partner Hlompho Kekana in central midfield, while Ajax Amsterdam’s Thulani Serero also starts.

Art the back, Eric Mathoho and Thulani Hlatshwayo will partner up in central defence.

Bafana XI: Khune, Mphahlele, Mathoho, Hlatshwayo, Matlaba, Dolly, Furman, Kekana, Serero, Makola, Gabuza

Subs: Mabokgwane, Mhlongo, Mobara, Manyisa, Mahlangu, Patosi, Vilakazi, Mncwango, Gabuza, Nhlapo, Langerman
