Phakaaathi has learnt that Felipe Ovono will be Orlando Pirates’ number one goalkeeper this season.

Brighton Mhlongo was Bucs’ number one last season, with Ovono and Siyabonga Mpontshane his deputies, but a source close to Pirates told Phakaaathi that Ovono will start ahead on Mhlongo this season.

“The management wanted to put Ovono in the transfer list, but Muhsin (Ertugral) told them he preferred Ovono as his number one goalkeeper,” said the source.

“Brighton and Jackson (Mabokgwane) will fight for the second choice goalkeeper spot. As for (Siyabonga) Mpontshane, Pirates wants to send him on loan somewhere, but no club has approached them for his services. I looks like he is going to spend his time playing for the MDC team this season.”

Meanwhile, Pirates fans seem to support Ertugral’s decision to name Ovono as his number one goalkeeper.

A poll posted on the Phakaaathi website showed that of the 514 people who voted, 52% (266) believe that Ovono should be the Bucs first choice this season, while 31% (157) think that Mhlongo should retain his number one spot.

Fifteen percent (78) said Mabokgwane should be Bucs’ number one goalkeeper, while a mere 2% (13) voted for Mpontshane.
