Gomez, the Referee-of-the-Season last time out, took centre stage during the match when he gave away eight yellow cards to both teams and a red card to Stars. Defender Soriola Gege saw red for elbowing Mame Niang in the penalty area just before the interval and the United striker equalised from the spot kick after Stars had opened the scoring from new signing Mongezi Bobe.
But Komphela was not pleased with Gomez’s performance throughout the match and said with officiating like that; no team will need an opponent.
“I thought we were going to give a very good account of ourselves up until the referee decided on his own to say no, this time I’m spoiling everything,” Komphela said.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. Yellow cards flashed like they were out of fashion. There was a match we played against Golden Arrows in Durban last season where Gomez gave us two red cards.
“But there was a stage where you could see the referee was just to take the ball and throw it inside the net, the guy was giving freekicks, yellow cards and I said what’s going on with this guy. Is he out of his mind?”
Komphela also said it’s a disgrace for the country after Gomez was named the Referee-of-the-Season in May and that if this is best the country is offering, then local football is going nowhere.
“This guy is the referee of the season. It’s a disgrace to whoever puts him there.
“If this is the best that comes out from South Africa, the country has no quality.
“I’m not insulting those who made the choice, but this guy is not doing justice to the choice they made.
“That’s unfortunate because Gomez is the Referee-of-the-Season and I’m sure the referee who should have been given that accolade, would have handled this game much better.”
