Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite urges fans to welcome the return of Steven Pienaar.

Mashamaite says it is unfair to label the 34-year-old as “too old”, and says South African football supporters should in fact be delighted with “Schillo” possible move to the Premier Soccer League.

“South African people are mostly likely to say ‘ahh he is old now, he is deadwood’, but this is the player who has played in Holland, who has played in Germany and who has played in England.

“So him returning is not only a confident booster for the league but for the youngsters as well who have dreams of playing at the top stage,” said the former Bidvest Wits captain.

Pienaar has been without a club after his contract with English side Everton was not renewed after a series of injuries that have kept the former Tottenham Hot Spurs midfielder out of action.

Pienaar has since been linked with a move to one of the PSL top three clubs in Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

It has also emerged through the grapevine that Pienaar’s salary would be in the region on R650 000 per month, should a move materialise.
