Resting after national duty helps – Matlaba

Orlando Pirates stand-in Skipper Thabo Matlaba says all it took was enough resting after coming back from national duty to help the Buccaneers advance to the next stage of the Nedbank Cup.

Matlaba was part of Shakes Mashaba’s team that played two 2017 Afcon qualifiers against Cameroon two weeks ago.

But, he managed to pull out a man-of-match performance in the Nedbank Cup encounter against Jomo Cosmos, which saw his side win 3-1 at Olen Park last Sunday.

“It is not difficult, when you come back you just have to rest. I had about six days rest, that is why I was able to get the man-of-the-match,” said Matlaba.

The skipper added that the Cosmos home-ground forced them to go in hard and it could have been a different score-line had they played in Orlando Stadium, where they were able to thrash Ezenkosi 5-0 in the club’s last meeting.

“Orlando Stadium is big if we play well we can win a game by a big margin, but the pitch was so small, that is why we had to penetrate “
