Phakamani Mahlambi is out for the rest of the season and probably the 2016 Rio Olympics after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt confirmed the news to Phakaaathi yesterday.

“It is a huge blow,” said Hunt.

“We lost Papy Faty and now we have lost him (Mahlambi) for the whole season.”

The 18 year-old striker has sprung into the limelight at Wits this season and played a key role in qualifying South Africa for the Olympics, scoring the winning penalty in the third-place play-off against Senegal at the Caf Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Recovery time from an ACL tear is listed at between six and nine months, which leaves Mahlambi in a race against time to be fit for the Olympics, which start in August.
