Free State Stars have confirmed that coach Ernst Middendorp today tendered his resignation letter.
As reported by Phakaaathi earlier, Middendorp is set to take up the Maritzburg United coaching job that was left vacant following Mandla Ncikazi’s sacking in September.
“Yes, I can confirm that Ernst has resigned as Stars coach. Obviously, his resignation came as a shock to us,” Stars’ general manager Rantsi Mokoena told Phakaaathi.
“I was busy wrapping up at the office for the Christmas holidays and then I got an email from him, saying he is leaving. We didn’t have time to talk about it. We were caught by surprise. I mean, we’re on the break and we’re returning on January 9, so when are we going to organise another coach now? Anyway, what is done is done.”
Mokoena could not be drawn into commenting on reports that Middendorp is set to re-join Maritzburg.
“Look, I don’t want to comment on that because that doesn’t involve us. I don’t even know where he is going. Our concern now is to try and find a new coach before the league resumes,” concluded Mokoena.
