Cape Town City are to release Tshepo Gumede, who has hardly played since Benni McCarthy took over.

A source claimed the 27-year-old defender might be used in a swap deal with Maritzburg United as City are chasing Siyanda Xulu.

“Tshepo’s future there is not okay. Benni has made it clear he wants two experienced defenders but he already has Tshepo. He might be loaned out or even released because it doesn’t look like he is in Benni’s plans,” said the source.

City have also already signed a North African defender who is said to have also had stints overseas, but his identity has yet to be released.
