Phakaaathi has learnt that Bidvest Wits are now the frontrunners to land the signature of Free State Stars striker Moeketsi Sekola.
Initially, Sundowns were said to be leading the race, with reports also indicating that the 26-year-old striker will join the Brazilians in January.
But now a source close to the player told Phakaaathi that Wits have tabled a good offer for the 2014/15 Absa Premiership’s top goalscorer.
“Sekola was keen to join Chiefs when they showed interest, but then it seems as though they were not serious because they didn’t table an offer for him. Sundowns then also showed interest, but Wits are really serious about Sekola and he is likely to join them either inn January or at the end of the season,” said the source.
“I guess Chiefs and Sundowns were put off by Stars’ reluctance to sell at the end of last season. Who knows? They may rekindle their interest now that Stars are willing to sell, but at this stage Wits are the favourites to land him.”
Meanwhile, defender Ruben Cloete is said to be on his way to back to Ea Lla Koto.
Cloete, who played for Stars between 2007 and 2010, is currently playing for Chippa United, but is struggling to get game time at the Chilli Boys.
The 33-year-old defender is said to be keen to be reunited with his former coach Ernst Middendorp at Stars.
Cloete played under Middendorp at Maritzburg United.
