Tefu Mashamaite’s former club Bidvest Wits have ruled out signing the defender.

The 30-year-old defender, who parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season, is currently without a club after failing to win a contract with New York City, with whom he had undergone a 10-day trial.

Mashamaite caused a stir on Thursday when he posted a picture of himself in Wits gear. That raised speculation that he could be heading back to the Students, but Wits say that’s not the case.

“We already publicly stated three months ago that we are not interested,” said Wits CEO Jose Ferreira on Friday.

“It is not because he is not a quality player, but we feel we already have the best two centre backs in the country (Thulani Hlatshwayo and Buhle Mkhwanazi).”

Mashamaite, who decided against signing a new deal with Chiefs, has been linked to a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, but his agent Jazzman Mahlakgane has previously insisted that there has been no contact from the Brazilians.
