Amakhosi already reached the record points total in a 16-team Absa Premiership, when they moved to 66 points by beating Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night.

The previous record was set last season by Pitso Mosimane’s Brazilians, who reached 65 points from 30 matches.

Chiefs still have two games to play and if they beat Wits they will also set the record for the number of wins in 16-team top flight season. Sundowns again set the record last season with 20 wins, which Chiefs matched by beating the Brazilians on Wednesday.

Amakhosi are currently 18 points clear at the top of the table, meanwhile, and well set to break the all-time top flight record for the margin between first and second place.

That record was also set by Sundowns when they won the 1999/2000 league by 11 points from Orlando Pirates.

If Chiefs can go unbeaten to the end of the season, meanwhile, they will equal the record for the lowest number of defeats in a PSL season, set by Ted Dumitru’s Amakhosi, who lost twice in the 2004/5 campaign.
