Khune absence fuels exit talk

Itumeleng Khune’s absence from the Kaizer Chiefs side against Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night adds further credence to the rumours that he could be on his way to Choorklop next season.

Khune was available again after suspension for Amakhosi against the Brazilians, but Stuart Baxter picked Reyaad Pieterse instead of the former Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain.

Khune is reported to have signed a pre-contract with Sundowns, while Chiefs were this week forced to deny reports of a spat between him and Amakhosi football manager Bobby Motaung.

Motaung, according to the Sunday World newspaper, allegedly told Chiefs officials not to allow Khune onto the FNB Stadium pitch last week to celebrate with the team, after Chiefs had sealed the league title with a 4-1 win over Polokwane City.

Khune’s contract at Chiefs expires in June, and he has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal. While Chiefs say negotiations are ongoing, rumours have been around all season that Amakhosi have been unhappy with Khune’s attitude.

It could be that Chiefs management feel that with Brilliant Khuzwayo and Reyaad Pieterse at the club, the club no longer needs Khune, who is likely to get a major pay rise if he moves to Sundowns.
