SuperSport clinch Gauteng Cup title

SuperSport United were crowned the champions of the Gauteng Cup after winning 4-3 on penalties over cross-city rivals Mamelodi Sundown.

United faced stern competition from cross-town rivals University of Pretoria in an earlier matched the ended with a 2-2 scoreline. Matsatsantsa a Pitori then set-up an interesting Tshwane derby against Sundowns after winning 5-4 on penalties.

Downs though, eased into the final after thrashing Moroka Swallows 5-0 in the first match.

The Brazilians’ coach Pitso Mosimane ealier indicated that the tournament would provide a picture of what he needs to fix before the start of the new season in August. They will play Maritzburg United in their first game of the season.

Sundowns’ first real chance at goal came in the 30th minute when Percy Tau’s attempt flirted with the goalposts after a precise pass from Teko Modise. Downs seemed the better of the two sides and created numerous chances that could have been converted to goal.

The two Pretoria sides exhibited signs of fatigue towards the end of the first half, that ended with a goalless stalemate.

Katlego Mashego then broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute after firing a thunderous shot that easily went past United shot-stopper Pule Boalefa before Thabo September cancelled out Mashego’s goal before being crowned Gauteng Cup champions after the penalties.
