Stars beat SuperSport to finish ninth

Platinum Stars secured a 1-0 win over SuperSport United in their final Premiership encounter of the season at Lucas Moripe Stadium, on Saturday.

Bongi Ntuli produced the only goal of the game, as Stars held on for a vital win to end their campaign. The victory meant a move up to 37 points, and a ninth place finish on the league table.

SuperSport, meanwhile, remained on 48 points as they dropped one place to fifth on the final standings. Kaizer Chiefs finished just ahead of their Pretoria opposition in fourth on 50 points.

SuperSport had the first decent chance of the afternoon in just the third minute of the encounter. The hosts were awarded a free kick, and the ball was sent into the area by Mandla Masango which was met by Morgan Gould whose header drifted just wide.

Another inviting opportunity accrued for SuperSport in the eighth minute when Bradley Grobler tried his luck, but Steven Hoffman made a comfortable save in the Stars area.

In response Stars had a dip at goal at the other end, with the shot coming in from Vuyo Mere but it did not trouble SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams.

On the half hour mark, Thabo Mnyamane reeled off a shot for SuperSport but his effort was sent just right of the target.

The next opportunity fell to Stars as Benson Shilongo directed a shot narrowly wide of the SuperSport goal.

Stars took the lead two minutes after the break, as Ntuli produced a clinical finish to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

Second-half substitute Thuso Phala for SuperSport reeled off a shot in the 55th minute, but could not find the equaliser his side sought.

As the game drew to a close, SuperSport could not find a goal to level matters as they ended their season in defeat.
