I sent Mhlongo a message – Palacios

Palacios says he had to assure the Pirates keeper he was still their first choice keeper after their 6-1 loss to SuperSport United.

Orlando Pirates interim coach Augusto Palacios says he sat down with goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo ahead of their Telkom Knockout clash with Highlands this past weekend at the Orlando Stadium after the keeper had conceded six goals in their previous game.

The Buccaneers were handed a humiliating 6-1 defeat by SuperSport United in a league, with all the United goals coming in the second half.

“Before this [Highlands Park game], I sent Brighton a message, and I called him the next day. I told him it happens in football. Barcelona scored 4-0 against Manchester City, and after that Manchester beat Barcelona. When it came to the lineup, there were no doubts for me to put Brighton, because if I don’t put him I kill him completely,” said the Pirates coach.

Palacios further revealed that he had to remind Mhlongo about his past games and how he had done well for the team in the past and assured him he was the first choice keeper at the club.

“He had a special training, we spoke in my room. We talked about the past, I reminded him about all the games he did and how he saved Pirates in so many games. And I told him that he is still number one, he does not need to worry. He just needs to correct what he needs to correct.”

Pirates went on to win the TKO tie 2-1 to book a spot in the semifinals of the competition, and they have been drawn against the very same SuperSport team.
