DJ Fresh: Another one bites the dust?

When will #EnoughReallyBeEnough?

I remember quite clearly when #MeToo began. Women were standing together in unity fighting against the historical trend of men taking advantage of women.

Celebrities were coming out with their stories of sexual harassment, abuse and violence. It seems like the world came to a standstill with the shock of certain names on the wall of shame. The Harvey Weinsteins, Chris Browns and R. Kellys of the world were named and shamed on Social Media by women who finally had the strength to utter those words that had been choked back for years.

Our own country has finally stood up to announce that #EnoughIsEnough (it’s taken way too long in my opinion). As a victim of abuse myself, I know all too well that feeling of fear, embarrassment, self-blame and guilt. I know all too well how to hide behind the mirror.

We have lost too much, there are too many little girls, women and mothers who have been destroyed by the age-long cycle of abuse and power. And let’s not forget our sons.

And now the latest allegations of rape against DJ Fresh from an anonymous accuser have once again rocked the country.

Hear me out, though. We still have so many incredible men in our country, husbands, fathers and friends. Men who support us, stand up for us and walk alongside us as we fight this plague that is sadly destroying our faith in all men in general.

I’m not saying that DJ Fresh is guilty or innocent. That’s not my judgment to make, although it is pretty hard to not automatically crucify him in my thoughts, along with any other person who has been accused.

STATEMENT ‪RE: #AmINext_SA ‬

I do, however, think we need to be careful to lay blame on all men. Yes, we want to shout from the rooftops that all men are dogs, that all men are sexually natured, in turn whether it be by thought or deed, taking advantage of us.

As a mother of boys, I don’t want my children to automatically be inserted into this group. I don’t want people assuming that they are “triggered” to behave in this way. It is our responsibility to educate them, raise them to be the fighters of justice and not the perpetrators of heinous crimes. It’s a huge responsibility, but it is ours!
