Undertakers have gone bananas
It seems to elude the association that our former president is mired in allegations of state capture and corruption.
Straight from the “you cannot make this up department” comes the announcement that the National Funeral Practitioners Association of South Africa (Nafupa SA) will be honouring former president Jacob Zuma for his “selfless efforts in making South Africa a better country”.
The association says Zuma, who is among 18 people and organisations being honoured by undertakers, played a major role economically and socially during his presidency.
Nafupa SA says although his tenure was marred by controversy, he did a lot for service delivery and radical economic transformation.
It seems to elude the association that the former president is mired in allegations of state capture and corruption – which involve billions of rands. That money could, and should, have been used to make the lives of poor people in this country a little better.
And in becoming the man at the centre of the state capture network, Jacob Zuma acted in anything but a selfless way.
As far as radical economic transformation is concerned, Zuma cynically used that as a cover for, and a diversion from, what he and his cronies were doing and planning.
We must not allow the story of Jacob Zuma to be airbrushed from our history.
