Bidvest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic go head to head in the Telkom Knockout final this afternoon at the Princess Magogo stadium in KwaMashu, Durban, with a winner extremely difficult to predict.
Ordinarily, Gavin Hunt’s “Clever Boys” would be heavy favourites, a side packed with star quality that won the MTN8 and Absa Premiership last season.
Yet Wits have been mostly dreadful in the 2017-18 campaign and are currently rock bottom of the league table, with this run to the Cup final their only salvation.
New signings such as Steven Pienaar and Daylon Claasen simply haven’t yet shown their class, while injuries have also disrupted the squad.
Celtic, meanwhile, narrowly staved off relegation last season and little was expected of Phunya Sele Sele when little-known Veselin Jelusic took over ahead of the new campaign.
But Jelusic has built a side that has proved difficult to beat, losing just three times so far this season.
Jelusic’s side are just three points off the top of the league table and have a chance to pick up a first trophy for Celtic’s passionate support base since Clinton Larsen’s Celtic side stunned Sundowns 1-0 to win the Telkom Knockout almost exactly five years ago.
