The joke’s never on you, Trevor Noah

You remind us we can laugh at each other and at ourselves and that defining yourself by your colour is the real joke.

Have you heard the one about Trevor Noah and state capture? He went to the States and he captured their hearts, from the viewers to the critics…

Ha, ha Trevor … We know we’re not a patch on you when it comes to comedy, but we’d just like to say well done on winning that Emmy award in America this week for your stunning presence on The Daily Show.

What makes your success even more amazing is that it’s a tough gig and Americans are one tough crowd.

They’re not going to cut you any form of slack because you were once disadvantaged by apartheid (not that you ever played that card, although the absurdities of race underpin many of your gags).

You got the Emmy, Trevor, because you’re one of the best comedians – and TV presenters – in the world. Finish and klaar, as one of our former police chiefs would have said.

Your comedy is more than just a belly laugh, though. You remind us that we can laugh at each other and at ourselves and that defining yourself by your colour is the real joke.

We look forward to seeing many more of your triumphs. And, Trevor: please don’t forget us.
